The SOS team have been very busy putting together a nine-day programme of events for Sustainability on Sea (SOS) 2019. We are now well over 60 events include craft workshops, storytelling, films, activism, beach cleans, guided walks, bike rides, woodland skills, gardening, apple pressing, energy advice, permaculture, food sharing and much more! SOS coincides with the Global Climate Strike. From September 20-27 millions will walk out of workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers demanding an end to the age of fossil fuels. Sustainability On Sea has been achieved through the hard work and time of a committed team of volunteers. We need an additional 30 volunteers to make Car Free Day (22nd September) and the Big Green Fair (29th September) a BIG SUCCESS! Can you help? A stretch of Hastings seafront from Warrior Square to the pier will be closed to traffic on Sunday 22nd September to mark World Car Free Day. The road will be turned into a pedestrianised community space with entertainment and activities devised to encourage local people to reimagine the town without the pollution, noise and stress of car traffic and promote sustainable transport alternatives. Over the summer, Sustainability on Sea is holding a junior photography competition for the children of Hastings, St Leonards and the surrounding areas called, “Love it or Leave it”. We would like children to take a photo of what they love about their town and what they would like to leave, change or make better so that, during future festivals, the school element can be planned around what the children really want. World Car Free Day is celebrated across sthe globe on September 22, encouraging people to give up their cars for a day. With the help of the local council, we’ve secured a road closure between Warrior Square and the White Rock Theatre to celebrate the day and we are now full steam ahead with planning! We are very pleased to announce a new funding award from the Chalk Cliff Trust. This will pay for a number of learning events to take place during the festival. Events include a day of activities for families and young children in Hollington Church Wood and a workshop for people with special needs using willow and recycled materials at Friary Gardens.
Thank you to the lovely people at Lush who have given £2,787 to support the activities of the Sustainability On Sea festival. The money will be used by the organisers to support the SOS events, the Big Green Fair, the beach sculpture and marketing costs.

We are really pleased to announce that the National Lottery Community Fund has awarded SOS 2019 with an Awards for All grant. Many thanks to the #NationalLottery for supporting SOS 2019. The fund will help us to include workshops, film shows, speaker talks in our programme and publicise the event to a wider audience. We want to involve as many people in the community as possible. Please get in touch if you are interested in participating.
We are looking for community groups, schools, colleges, businesses, faith groups, community centres etc to participate in SOS 2019. We want this year’s festival to reach more residents and so we are encouraging groups across the town to run their own sustainable events as part of the programme.
